Omg I *love* the idea that Handles was a Clara incarnation who got converted…if we see nothing to contradict it, I'm accepting that as head canon :-D It really is an excellent idea. And it means MORE CLARA.
I've been excited about 'Dark Water' ever since the episode title was announced (got majorly distracted at work and sent such_heights a flaily email about it!). I've not had much to tie it to until 'Blackpool' (well water stuff generally, but nothing Clara specific). So I am even more excited now.
I think the only other overt 'water' reference that I can think of off the top of my head is Danny's thing about digging 23 wells…where does Danny fit into all this? Wells! I'd forgotten about them. Danny, generally, is the stable factor here. The one living in 'the world', rather than the Doctor (heavens) or Missy (below). If Clara gets pulled in opposite directions (both literally, and as concerns her identity) Danny will be the thing grounding her in her humanity. (A soldier who dug wells. I shall have to ponder.)
