I mean, maybe at first he has reason to distrust Danny, so he takes him aside and points out that while Clara can take care of herself, she is precious to him and making her cry is not a good course of action—incidentally scaring the pants off Danny, because Capaldi. And then, when it turns out that Danny's a bona fide hero and saves them both, he decides that Danny's perfect for her and starts pushing the two of them together, which is complicated by the fact that Danny is being scrupulously hands-off since the Doctor scared him, and Clara thus has absolutely no idea that there might be something there . . .

He's not been in a lot of things, which is good, actually. It means he's a blank slate, rather than 'the bloke from [insert example]'.
