As many times as the First Evil seemed to change its plan of attack, I sometimes got the impression that it had the attention span of Homer Simpson. "I'm going to conquer the wor...oh, donuts." :) I actually wrote an essay a while ago about The First that you might be interested in: Epiphany: I think I understand The First Evil!
The other option is to go with frenchani's theory and see The First as wholly metaphorical. (You can find her essay here - I really love her idea!)
