I Robot, You Jane. :)

First I just need to say how much I love all of you and I think I'd go insane without you. Seriously. (And I'm sorry for all the spamming and being so useless at commenting. Will catch up with comments as soon as I can.) But I will *not* whine again - instead I shall continue to talk about Season 1 which is proving very, very entertaining! :)

Last night it was 'I Robot, You Jane' which I think is on many people's 'worst 10' list. I could honestly not remember much, except that there was something about a lame robot... and yet again Buffy surprised me with a very enjoyable episode!

I'd completely forgotten the beginning (1418 - youngster pledges his love to Moloch before having neck broken, then monks trap the demon in a book). Actually the whole love thing was the only odd thing - why does he need people's love? And what does he do with it? But nevermind, the whole 'corrupter' thing is neat anyway - as is the 'Where am I?' on the computer screen when he's been scanned.

This is a Willow episode, but I don't really have much to say about her. Although the fact that she tries to beat up Moloch at the end shows that when she gets angry/hurt she fights back, rather than internalise it.

Buffy is no Veronica Mars, but she doesn't do too badly here. And she looks truly bad when she nearly gets electrocuted - her line about her hair is very cute. :)

I found Moloch rather neat, to be honest - or a neat idea anyway. A sort of proto-Adam in many ways, and the robot was better-looking than I remembered! And once he'd been 'contained' he suddenly reminded me of Illyria ('I was all powerful, now I'm stuck in this shell').

Another thing I'd forgotten were Dave and Fritz - early Nerds of Doom I think. Dave was Jonathan/Andrew - enticed, but ultimately unable to go through with their plan. Fritz on the other hand is probably the nastiest guy I've seen apart from Warren. ::shivers::

But... to be honest I wasn't to bothered about all of the above. The thing that totally made this episode for me was the fact that it introduces Miss Calender!!! Oh the adorableness of Jenny/Giles - they are so wonderful together, arguing and flirting, and I defy anyone who isn't made of stone not to fall for Giles in their last scene:

Ms. Calendar: Honestly, what is it about them [computers] that bothers you so much?
Giles: The smell.
Ms. Calendar: Computer's don't smell, Rupert.
Giles: I know! Smell is the most powerful trigger to the memory there is. A certain flower or a, a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences... long forgotten. Books smell. Musty and, and, and, and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer, is, uh, it... it has no, no texture, no, no context. It's, it's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then, then the getting of knowledge should be, uh, tangible, it should be, um... smelly.

*happy sigh*

And now I need a Giles/Jenny icon...

ETA: Gah! Completely forgot the ending! "Let's face it: none of us are ever gonna have a happy, normal
relationship."

As usually happens in even the worst of the Buffy episodes, there is always something there to redeem it. (I'm sure there's something in As You Were if I give it a good long think.) But, yeah, I Robot, You Jane is, for the most part, a fairly forgettable episode except for the Jenny/Giles interaction. They're just so cute together! She's all hip and tech, and he's all stodgy and old-fogyish. So cute!

Aren't they just. I think my very first BtVS ship was Giles/Jenny. I must admit I quite like I Robot, You Jane. It's not a great episode, but I don't really think it deserves to be in the bottom 10, but then very few Buffy episodes do.

Well I like this episode if noone else does. I know the whole Willow/"All I want is your love!" thing is daft and it's all a bit silly, but don't you see, it's a demon... IN A ROBOT!!! For once, sci-fi stops taking itself so damn seriously and does something everybody always wanted to see.

You know, I don't hate that episode. I actually can't think of a Buffy episode that I "hate," although there are those I like less than the others. But the Jenny/Giles stuff in I Robot is just too, too good, and that last scene is too funny!

I think S1 often gets dismissed, because so much of the show is so very brilliant - but even the 'worst' of Buffy is immensely watchable. I'm enjoying my re-watch *so* much! Especially because of things like that last scene... :)
