S8.10. Sadly paralysed with not caring.

So...

Best thing about issue 10: We finally find out why Buffy is in that bloody castle.
Worst thing about issue 10: We finally find out why Buffy is in that bloody castle.

So, the reason Buffy is living like a supervillain is that she *is* a supervillain. The upside to this is that it makes sense of most of what's gone before (most, not all). The downside: I just lost the last, tiny little shred of belief or interest in comic!Buffy. (I wouldn't even be writing this if it wasn't for the fact that I didn't sleep very well last night and the thing kept going in circles in my head.) The Buffy we knew for seven seasons had faults - plenty of them - but she was *honest* (certainly when it came to money). When suicidally depressed and desperate for money to pay the bills, she went to work at the Doublemeat Palace, refusing help from Spike (how many fics has there been written where he gets himself a proper job to help her out? And why? Because he knows that she wouldn't approve of illgotten money, period). So, looking after 500 Slayers didn't come cheap, huh? 1. (or a) I'm sure The Council has lots of money in Swiss bankvaults, but if that isn't the case then b (or 2) Get a job! Let them all get jobs, for that sake. Heroes do not steal!

ETA: Meant to mention that of course different 'heroes' are different. Angel has done the heist thing of course (several times), and it's part of how Mal Reynolds makes a living, and that's fine. Buffy however was never like that.

The one thing I've been worrying about is a possible crossover between s8 and AtF, because obviously Spike has to stay in AtF. Well now those fears have been laid to rest. Comic!Buffy is quite simply not good enough for Spike, and if I wrote my own re-union he'd ride off into the sunset with Faith.

Anyway, I have no idea why Joss is so keen on dragging Buffy's name and character through the mud. It's a real shame, because the issue is definitely by far the best we've had. Tightly written, full of mirroring and themes and clever wordplay, and lovely characterisations - especially of Willow, who is utterly spot-on. Re. Dawn, she has apparently turned from klepto into a slut! Ah well, Dawn was always stuck with kinda crappy story-lines, at least in this issue she was entertaining.

So, someone 'close to Buffy' is going to betray her, huh? Well my money is on Xander (why is he wearing that military outfit all the time?), and you know what? I'm going to be cheering him on, 'cause she deserves it! Can't they just wrap up the story in the next issue? 'And then Twilight won, the world became totally boring and Buffy married Christian Bale, the end' would suit me fine.

Anyway, it's only a comic, and that fact is becoming more and more clear with every Torchwood trailer - because they make me squee and bounce and countdown to Jan 16th like mad. And no, not just for JM - for all of them. It is such a hit-and-miss show, but I am terribly fond of it, and it has hot boys (and girls) kissing on my screen [points to icon], and that just pwns any comic. (This does not mean that I have in any way gone off Buffy or Angel the shows! I love them as much as ever (just so we're clear) and am busy writing fic! Also I'm currently re-watching AtS S1 and drowning in nostalgia.

Anyway, this is (hopefully) the last I'll ever write about s8. [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy has a great review of issue 10 here (with links to other reviews) and a ficlet: The Good Guys. Spoilers galore obviously.
