I had a little squee when I realized Martha was engaged to Tom at that point—of course she would, it's only canon but I don't care. Martha/Tom ftw. ♥ I loved the Master's remark about alliterating—I love alliterations, and I love him also. Priceless as ever. The Master gets all the best lines. :) And yes, this fic is wonderfully AU, so no Mickey! (Not that I don't love Martha/Mickey, but Tom fits perfectly well!)
The dialogue between Martha and the Master was so very sharp, I loved her anger and disgust and his flippant attitude. Martha is awesome!
The part about the Doctor feeling so saddened after hearing the news, although he was very happy for Martha, was extremely moving—with the references to Rose and Joan… ♥ And I loved how his mind turned to Alex after that—how badly he wanted to protect the child, keep him happy, give him what he couldn't have in a way. I was also fascinated by the way he wondered about Alex's children, and the parallel with Cassandra. So very interesting. It's all this ball of connected issues - what do we want in life, and - of course - with Alex, what can he have? He's the last of his kind, after all...
The dialogue about Rose was wonderful. It hurt, like the Master can make anything hurt, with that sharp, cruel tongue of his (how he stressed that Rose really wasn't that special, except she was…), and the Doctor's reactions and lines were amazing. The insight was perfect. ♥ (See I don't really ship Doctor/Rose as such, but I am very much aware how pivotal she was in his life, and that should never be forgotten.)
I'd never given much thought to the symbolism of Nine taking Rose to see the end of the world—it's amazing—and of course she turned the tables on him, made him want to live… And I loved how he compared that to Lucy, whose reaction was entirely the opposite ("There's no point. No point to anything. Not ever.")… The parallels are just to gorgeous to ignore...
The Master's reactions to Ten opening up were perfect. Bewilderment, watchfulness—he did indulge him and recognized Rose had been marvelous with the Emperor, but immediately used the connection to his advantage to taunt him. Typical. Well, he's too old to change. Well I say that. I think they'll probably get more used to each other as time goes by and they are forced to 'live together' without killing each other.
I DIED at the pterosaur's random arrival. Awesomesauce. And called Leia too. *beams* Alex likes Star Wars, hence the name. And it was the perfect catalyst for the next part of the conversation.
Loved how the Doctor criticized the Master wanting to control everything, even the pet—that seemed harmless enough, but the symbolism was there indeed. Not that he had a wide range of beings to control around. The brief lines about Alex were so very meaningful. Necessary warning… I don't think the Master would ever do anything to Alex - and yet. He wants to shape him in his own image... (But then so, to a certain degree, does the Doctor. You'll see what direction Alex goes in later.)
Loved that sentence… The whole ending part was really thought-provoking and moving. Well done! ♥ Thank you. And oh, all the things this scenario threw up was just too good to pass up, hence this fic. Although then Alex went and turned into a 3 dimensional character, and it no longer became about the Doctor & the Master, but about *him*...
