Serendipity is a funny thing...

This whole Joss mess has come along exactly as I decided to finally delve back into the AtS 'verse and finish a WIP I abandoned years ago. (As it happens, it's the only fic I've ever properly planned out, so I found my extensive notes and actually know where the story is going!)

Now, before beginning to write I figured I should probably watch a few episodes, just to make sure I had their voices right in my head; so I watched A Hole in the World and Shells. And it's a fascinating exercise in doublethink (doubleview?).

Like, I love the 'verse. I love the characters. I love the story. I will always be grateful to Joss & co for creating this world.

But there is also the fact that (the very very special) Fred has SIX men standing around her bedside. All of them going to go out and try to SAVE her. (See subject line...)

As you know, the only other women (still standing) in the extended cast are Harmony (who is delightful, but mostly comic relief) and Eve, who is very powerful yet lost all agency the second she lost her boyfriend. ETA: Oh and there's Nina too. I like Nina. It's sad her role never extends beyond Being The Girlfriend.

The interesting thing is that the same week my girls decided to watch [the new movie version of] Les Mis.

And it was exactly the same thing:

- Men make things happen.

- Women have things happen to them.

This is why Buffy (and Wonder Woman, Rey, et al) are so special. They make things happen.

(Possibly more musings later, but this is a pretty well-trodden path, and I'm preaching to the choir...)

Also I'm realising this is probably a pretty awful way to try to get people to read my 'Spike & Angel & Illyria go on an epic quest to undo the power of W&H' story, as it's rather male-centric. AH WELL. It's not like LJ is teeming with people reading AtS fic anymore. Although I should probably point out that there's a good deal of Buffy & her Slayer army in it too...

For those who want to try (and the lovely handful which read the first few chapters back in 2013 when I started posting and might want to have another look), you can find the fic here (well, the first 7 chapters):

Divided Destiny

More chapters coming soon! :D (*crickets*)

Wasn't going to write anything, but came across this:

Submissions Open for “We Told You”, a Joss Whedon Zine

Bleating Heart Press is making a zine! 'We Told You' is a 50-page zine about the problematic work and activism of writer, director and producer, Joss Whedon.

When Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole wrote about the breakdown of their marriage, dozens of think pieces were published examining his most recent works and the too common trend of famous male feminists revealing themselves as manipulative and insincere. Long running fansite Whedonesque shuttered and hundreds of fans saw their affection for his work die. For many, Cole’s letter came as a shock. But not for all of us.

We Told You will look at the decades of intersectional feminist critique, and just plain disbelieving anger, that has existed alongside the narrative of Joss Whedon, perfect male feminist. Essays will include close examinations of particular works and recurring trends (waifish, emotionally vulnerable heroines; misogynistic nerds as author avatars; the racist underpinnings of Firefly), as well as his legacy as a producer and celebrity male feminist.

As an example of disturbing trends in his works, here's the always excellent My Medea, from 2009 (original post here):

Personally, then I'm disappointed, but not surprised. After all, this is the guy who took his own feminist icon and [in the comics] slipped her a magical roofie so she could become wanking material.

(Turning off comments as I don't care enough to discuss it. Follow the tags if you want more grousing. Or, even better, read yunitsa's thoughts on her vid. Or contribute something to the zine.)

Especially love that he points out that 'the unflawed candidate DOES NOT EXIST'.

First of all: I have not seen Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And I don't know much about the Marvel 'verse except what I've picked up from the movies - and I haven't seen them all. (And it is Marvel, right? Have never read a single issue. I grew up with Asterix & Lucky Luke and Elfquest...)

So I don't know how accurate all the arguments are wrt Natasha's storyline are.

But I read this article with interest: Joss Whedon Calls “Horsesh*t” On Reports He Left Twitter Because Of Militant Feminists.

(Incidentally: 'I haven’t dealt with a lot of [hate], because my fans have always been sweet, erudite, interesting, compassionate people. Like, I don’t know any Buffy trolls.' <- Brb laughing forever.)

There are all sorts of pros & cons and different readings (both of the movie and of what Joss says), but overall, maybe it comes down to the problem of having One Person Represent A Whole Gender...

(Using Torchwood: Children of Earth icon as example of LOTS of different women, with different roles & agendas. <3) (Also, yes, I know adding women is a lot easier when not dealing with already established 'verses. Still. It's an issue.)
elisi: (Not Fade Away by amavel_bel.)
Finally saw it...

So, this was basically Angel S6, right? W&H allllll over everything, except they had a proper budget.

Shame about having no time for world building (OK, I brought my own, but...) - or a decent plot. Or characterisation. Or (as Darcy said) 'Where did Sigourney Weaver come from?'

Mostly then the Japanese school girls chanting a spell and turning the evil spirit into a frog was the highlight.

I know I said I was done with the comics, but to be honest this isn't really about them. But I left a comment on [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2's LJ about how Joss writes Spuffy (or rather, why he never will), which I thought people might be interested in. (Or not.)

Fandom is Captain Jack Harkness. (Note the stripes.)

Joss is Captain John Hart. (Note the sarcasm.)

From Jack's blog:

Captain John Hart came through the Rift, still as sociopathic as ever. And tried to kill us all. But come on, check out those cheekbones.

Personally, then I lost the last, tiny little shred of belief or interest in comic!Buffy three years ago, with the bank robbing reveal. Srsly, I am nodding along to every word I wrote back then. Which makes me sad, because there was so much more down to come... So yeah, I'm immune to the cheekbones. To those of you who think the cheekbones are worth it - and damn, they are alluring, I've been there - I sincerely hope that he won't stab you in the back (again).

ETA: Finally read #40. Faith's great. Kennedy is AWESOME! Buffy... Cut so as not to upset people )

[livejournal.com profile] adoxerella has a lovely More Joy Day reccing post, which reminded me of this awesome, awesome Firefly/Serenity vid:

The LJ post for it is here: Project Awesomesocks (very aptly named) and the first comment is from Joss himself. No really!

Anyway, it made me remember all the reasons I love that 'verse (which, unusually, I just love, with no urge to play with the meta), and Joss' writing and characters. *deep sigh* (He should never be allowed near [Buffy] comic books though. Never ever ever.)

Just saw that apparently someone or something called 'Care 2' is sponsoring a petition to show how people think a Buffy movie without Joss is a very bad idea. What cracked me up was this quote:

To credit John Kubicek's (Senior Writer, BuddyTV) statement - "Find me one person who liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer but not Joss, and I'll show you a liar."

Clearly this person has never encountered this thing called 'fandom'...

(Does anyone have a link to that 'Star Wars Fans Hate Star Wars' essay? The only ones I've found are dead. But it struck me as oddly appropriate. *g* Oh and I have no opinion on the possibility of a movie, but I figure it can't be worse/more bizarre than the comics.)

ETA: Oh, and here's a fabulous little sketch (which has nothing to do with Buffy, but it also made me laugh):

One reason I love BtVS so much is that Buffy gets a happy ending. She wins. I've not seen Dollhouse, but on his other shows winning doesn't enter into it. Angel will be forever fighting. Mal only wishes to keep flying.

But Buffy wins. And there's something else I've realised too. Putting it under a cut, so as not to take up all your flist.

As always, vids influenced my thinking and illustrate what I want to say:

Bachelorette by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 is Buffy, ultimately winning. (In the shape of a girl.)

And My Medea by [livejournal.com profile] yunitsa shows the flipside. (Mostly Dollhouse/Firefly.) I can't remember if I've rec'd it before, but if not - make sure you watch! (So come to me my love/I'll tap into your strength and drain it dry)

Do not click on this if you are in feeling in any way positive towards s8. No really. )

Finally, Barb is being awesome again and has decided to host a ficathon (see linked post for more details):

NERTZ TO YOU, JOSS WHEDON! FICATHON

Rules: Write a story that addresses something that drives you nuts about S8. It can be any length, any pairing, any characters, any rating. It can be a story about Angel that takes into account that he's got a son he cares for. It can be a story about Giles being a competent, kick-ass researcher. It can be a story about Buffy being an effective leader. It can be a story that just has good pacing and a plot that makes sense. It can be shippy, or it can be gen. It can be comedy or tragedy, adventure or character study, kinky or vanilla, canon-compliant or wildly AU. It can be anything, as long as it takes an aspect of S8 that you don't like, and does it better.

(Disabling comments cause this is a rant and I'm not going to discuss it.)

I'm feeling generally pissed off, but shall spare you the (mostly RL-related) details. Instead I bring you a couple of quotes from our own Mr Whedon, from way back when. Please can we have that Joss back?

But nowadays I’m really cranky about comics. . . . Because most of them are just really, really poorly written soft-core. And I miss good old storytelling. And you know what else I miss ? Super powers. Why is it now that everybody’s like ‘I can reverse the polarity of your ions !’ Like in one big flash everybody’s Doctor Strange. I like the guys that can stick to walls and change into sand and stuff. I don’t understand anything anymore. And all the girls are wearing nothing, and they all look like they have implants. Well, I sound like a very old man, and a cranky one, but it’s true.” (Dark Horse interview)

What we don’t have, which is what some science fiction shows have, is we can’t just do a thing because it seems cool. Everything that we pitch, everything that we put out there, whether or not it works, is based on the idea of: The audience has been through this. A normal girl goes through this. A normal guy deals with this. You know, it’s issues of sexuality, popularity, jobs. Whatever it is, it’s got to be based in realism. We can’t just say, you know, `The warship’s come and, you know, they transmogrify, the-blah, blah, blah.’ We can’t do that. We can go to some pretty strange places, but at the start, we always have to be about, `How does the audience relate to having done this themselves ?’ (Fresh Air Interview)

Via this page of Joss Whedon quotes:

It’s better to be a spy in the house of love, you know ? . . . If I made ‘Buffy the Lesbian Separatist,’ a series of lectures on PBS on why there should be feminism, no one would be coming to the party, and it would be boring. The idea of changing culture is important to me, and it can only be done in a popular medium.

On the whole, I'd greatly have preferred the lectures.

ETA: Since I'm here, this vid is very, very good at showing the problematic nature of some of Joss' work:
