I'm in a fic-posting mood, but since I have nothing new to offer, I'll re-post my [livejournal.com profile] winter_of_angel contributions. Although, in the case of this particular offering, 'my contribution' is only minor. Let me explain:

Back when BtVS/AtS was still on air, one of the most brilliant people in fandom was [livejournal.com profile] the_royal_anna, whose post-episode posts were always spot-on and amazing. And sometimes she tried to do things a little differently...

Post-’Smile Time’ she posted this treasure, which is best described as ‘Angel’s life told in metaphor’, and unlike anything I’ve ever read elsewhere. Also full of meta!

Then, about a year ago, when I was re-reading it yet again, it struck me that it really ought to have a final act to reflect the end of the show... so I wrote it. This was horribly presumptuous of me of course, but she didn’t mind - as a matter of fact she even allowed me to re-post it. :)

Go on - indulge! (It's not very long... trust me, you won't be sorry!)

(You can find the original post here if you want notes etc. It is well worth a look! As are all her other BtVS/AtS posts of course.)

[livejournal.com profile] deborahc had the best thought:

Angel: “You’re at a crossroads, I know. It’s either go for the easy fix and wait for the consequences, or take the hard road and go with faith.”

For me, it's not about the temptation of Spike but about the temptation of the Gem of Amara. He's hidden it in the sewers at this point and is trying to decide what to do with it. In the end he chooses the hard road and destroys it (the ponce).

(Still think my take is funnier, but I'm sure she's right!)

Last night we watched ITD, and it is always curious to watch an episode whilst in the middle of writing a fic about the characters in question, because I find that while I’m enjoying watching, another part of my brain is busy taking note of everything that happens and everything they say and do, and seeing how it agrees with my own depictions of them, and wondering if there’s anything I can use...

Anyway, I’ve only seen this ep once before (although the slashy scenes has been used in a million vids), but there was one point where I realised that last time I must have been asleep. I mean, the whole meta-thing is something I think I can’t switch off, but apparently last time I did. ‘Cause it’s even more S/A centric than I thought...

Thoughts under cut because I don’t want people to laugh at how slow I am... )

Wanted to post something yesterday, but other people posted so many appropriate things and I couldn't think what to say.

But then this morning you - thanks to Impish Girl who's 'unwell' - get the tale of [livejournal.com profile] lillianmorgan's visit, that I've been writing out in spare moments. I suck at making RL stuff interesting in the least, so this is mostly for myself (and LM) to remember what happened.

Now LM being especially wonderful, she sent me a birthday present that got here Saturday morning - Season 1 of Angel on dvd! There was much rejoicing, and in the evening Darcy and I watched the first two episodes. (He’s seen all of S5, but only bits’n’pieces of the rest, since we didn’t watch it back before Buffy ended. And I’ve only watched the whole show through once, so there was lots of things I’d forgotten. Mostly though I was reminded of just how adorable Angel is, and how much I love watching his show. *deeeeeeeep sigh* I miss my show.

Just a few notes on ‘City Of...’ )

So, I watched School Hard on Spike's birthday, and then (thank you [livejournal.com profile] molly_may for the link - I’ve read it before, but couldn’t remember where) read this very excellent review by Alira.

She’s rather scathing towards Angel, and towards the end has this to say (I’d question the ‘trustworthy’ part myself! *g*):

Buffy learns that Spike’s playful, resourceful, quippy, trustworthy, and very very good at fighting. That in his way, he's honourable. That he's easily bored and can't keep to a plan. That he's a good dancer. :)

What she doesn't learn is that Angel is basically useless. :)

So, is Angel useless? Well here are *my* thoughts. )

First of all, for clever and deep thoughts about this ep (as well as a lot of giggles), read these two posts by [personal profile] yhlee . Really, really excellent!

That lets me focus on the relationships. :)

The most obvious problem with this episode is that it stands out like a sore thumb amongst the other late-S5 eps. There’s a gradual build-up of darkness throughout S5 and then third last from the end we get something that is just silly and ridiculous and farcical. Pure comedy. And not just that, but pure *romantic* comedy. About Spike and Angel. Sure it’s way, way, way over the top - so over the top that sometimes it’s floating in free air and I wonder if the writers were on crack - but I can’t help loving it because it’s the most wonderful slashy love story.

ETA: I have no sporking clue as to why there are 4 cuts! I am now offically through with Rich Text! *kicks it a lot*

First of all, look at the wonderful icons moscow_watcher made! *loves*

Now I think that one reason Spike fans in particular have a problem with ‘Why We Fight’ is because of Spike-in-the-Nazi-coat. It’s a funny thing, but a couple of years ago Prince Harry (around 17 at the time I think) turned up at a fancy dress party in Nazi uniform. Obviously this was a PR disaster, and he had to do a public apology etc. But it illustrates my point rather nicely - this ep. is about Angel as the father, and here we see Spike as the eternal teen tearaway (which goes for most of unsouled!Spike - and vampires generally - of course). We see how he’s rather proud of having a ‘famous daddy’, and yet won’t stop being annoying and difficult. *But* - he does as Angel tells him.

Now going back to Angel-as-the-father (yet again, sorry), then we see he is not at all interested in helping the Initiative - their tales of dying soldiers leaves him cold. But then we get this moment:

MILITARY MAN (takes a top-secret file out of his briefcase, stands, tosses the file in Angel's lap):
We think we know what attacked our boys.

Angel reads that - and his face changes. And I’ll bet anything that Spike’s name was on that list. It’s like the old crook grudgingly agreeing to help the cops, because his kid’s involved... after all he *was* the one who taught him how to open a safe. He feels responsible. And possibly, maybe, just the tiniest bit worried. But notice that they still strap weights to his feet... ETA: Herself pointed out that he needed the weights to sink... But still - he didn't get a sudden burst of patriotism (he’s Irish!), and he really didn’t care about the war (he jumped ship off the coast of Maine and went underground till the war was over).

But of course once onboard the sub he gets attached to the crew - Lawson particularly, because I think Angel is drawn to people who believe they can make a difference - and then he has to destroy him. Is it any wonder that he decides that people generally are better off without him?

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] deborahc made me look at this bit of dialogue again:

LAWSON: I don't know. It's technical. (grabs the report, leafs through it) Something about stimulation and... control. They've been experimenting on them... and cutting into their brains.
SPIKE: That what got the Prince's coronet in a twist, isn't it? Found out you were gonna pop our tops and melon-ball us.
LAWSON: They're trying to create an army... out of things like you.
SPIKE: (looks at Angel) That explains why they nicked us. Cream of the crop. Wanna build an army of vampire slaves, you start at the top—with the generals.
LAWSON: (to the German) It's not enough what you're already doing in the world, is it? Only you and your fuehrer could come up with something this sick.
GERMAN: (laughs) Da sind wir nicht die Einzigen, mein Junge... (to Angel) nicht wahr?
ANGEL: Genug!
SPIKE: I am the only one don't speak Kraut?!
LAWSON: (to Angel) You knew about this?
SPIKE: He did?
ANGEL: It was part of the mission.

I hadn't actually thought about this in detail before - but Angel came to save Spike from being chipped (and used as gun fodder)! 'Why We Fight' indeed...

It's just so cute! *loves Angel*

ETA2: Oh! Brainwave! Maybe Angel sent Lawson and Spike off so they wouldn't be captured by the Americans! Remember Angel jumped ship as well and stayed 'underground'... Maybe his orders included bringing back the vampires as well as the info - and then he'd get a free pass himself or something. Hmmm...

This idea also puts his smile in a new light - he'd succeeded in his mission, keeping Spike safe. :)

"You gotta do what you can to protect your family. I learned that from my father."
Connor, Origin

So we see that Angel in both cases was willing to take on a mission he didn't want for the sake of his offspring. Very nice paralleling.

This is a plea to those of you who are good at capping! As those who read my 'Why We Fight' post know, there is a specific moment that I'd *love* to have a cap of (so I can bribe an icon maker into iconning it. Heh.).

It's towards the very, very end of scene 13 (on the DVD), when Angel sends Spike up the ladder after Lawson. Because he [Angel] smiles! It's very small, and very short, but it's definitely an affectionate smile and I really, really want it! *looks pleading* I'll write a drabble of your choice in exchange if you like!

*hugs and kisses to [livejournal.com profile] hesadevil!* Look! She even made a mini youtube video of the smile!!! (changed link so now you can actually see it! *facepalm*)

(*loves Angel to tiny little pieces*)

And just to stop this post from being completely pointless, a few more thoughts on what Lawson needed from Angel.

Oh - and something else. Angel warns Lawson that he'll stake him if ever they cross paths again. Spike does *not* get that warning! Interesting...

ETA: Now I really want to read a fic where Lawson turns up in LA in S4 when Angelus was around, because it would be *so* much fun! I could totally see Angelus playing Lawson and Connor against each other, and loving every minute. I doubt that such a fic exists though... [livejournal.com profile] germaine_pet - feel like writing it? *g*
