I don't really know how to begin this. Basically I wrote a story. A side-story to one of my fics. It was supposed to be short and neat, a nice little coming out tale, something to distract me from other, more complicated writing.
That... didn't really work out as planned.
A few months later the story is finally finished, but it's now 80k (40 chapters and an epilogue), and although it is still a fic, it's only very very loosely so. By which I mean - it's set in a Doctor Who AU, but you don't need any knowledge of that 'verse (or Doctor Who itself) to really follow the story. (The main thing being that includes my OC Alex, so people who like his stories might like to read this one, although he's very much a supporting character, on the sidelines. The only canon character to show up is Jack in a handful of cameos.)
What I'm trying to explain is that George, my protagonist, didn't just surprise me - his family, his background stories, opened up and revealed themselves to be fascinating
. To the point that I am seriously considering dragging him out of the fic world and turning him into a 'real boy'. (When I say he/the story surprised me, I mean that quite literally. *I* was shocked by some of the revelations that appeared.)
Now there's obviously an issue with the fact that I am not, nor have I ever been, a 15 year old gay boy, coming out. I am hugely aware that I am tackling a mine field, and have endless ways of getting stuff wrong. I apologise in advance, and would be very grateful for any corrections or guidance. (Please no flames. If you have an issue with anything please let me know, but I would never knowingly set out to insult or upset.) Seriously I am pretty terrified about actually posting the story. But I love them all too much to keep them to myself.
However, despite possibly turning the story into a book, I would still like to share the actual fic, and have been pondering how to do this, as I don't particularly want to publically post a potential novel. So I decided to utilise one of my other LJs - in this case one I set up years ago for my original writing: when_i_write
So! That's where I have posted Chapter 1
for everyone to see, although I'll post the rest flocked. So, if anyone's interested, that post (or this one) is also the place to sign up. Leave a comment, or friend when_i_write
, and I'll friend you back (from when_i_write) so you can see the rest of the entries, which I'll post as and when. Maybe a chapter a day? On week days? Or something? Suggestions welcome.
(Also, although I keep saying it's 'almost a novel', it's very much a first draft, so please bear that in mind. Plus, further story possibilities are already presenting themselves. My mind, quite literally, does not know when to stop.)
Summary: George Harold Bottomley often wondered why - if he was as ‘Gifted and Talented’ as everyone kept telling him he was - he was also so ordinary. Well, except for the fact that he was gay. And there was no ‘ordinary’ way to come out; no script to follow. But he desperately wanted rules - an established, accepted way of doing it… Like a form to fill out where he could put a cross in the ‘gay’ box and it’d get filed away with all other information about him, and he’d never have to worry about it again. Sadly, the world did not work like that. At all.
