The Obama Administration set up a “We the People” petition system — where a petition by an ordinary citizen requires a White House response if it gets 25,000 signatures within 30 days — and they've had a lot crazy requests. This one is the best - as is the response.

Created on Nov. 14, 2012, the petition demands that the Obama Administration “secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016.” It earned 34,435 signatures, more than enough to force a White House response, which was just posted to the White House Petitions website, penned by Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget. You can read it here, and yes, that's the actual title. It is quite simply the most awesome thing ever:

This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For.

Go. Read. Flail.

I've yet to write about the Christmas Special. Partly because I've not quite got my head together, and partly because other people have contributed vast and wonderful metas that you should all read. I have assembled a list:

The Memory of Snow: The Snowmen. by [livejournal.com profile] lonewytch

The Frozen Mirror by [livejournal.com profile] janie_aire

Shameless speculation on Clara by [livejournal.com profile] 10littlebullets

Eyes Front, Soldier by [livejournal.com profile] janie_aire

And finally this one (title is spoilery) by [livejournal.com profile] ibishtar which goes into another side of things.

For now I mostly want to pull out this snippet, from the beginning of [livejournal.com profile] janie_aire first essay, because I think it's pretty spot-on, and very much how I see the show:

The first thing to keep in mind is the intent and purpose of Doctor Who at this point in time. I maintain that it's positioning itself as mythology. The functions of mythology are to supply the symbols that represent the collective psyche of a society, to transmit a set of values if not a philosophy pointing the way to a life lived well, and to identify the pitfalls and fantasies that get in the way of our wholeness, if not our happiness -- especially the problems posed by suffering and death.

Most of all, mythology permits a sideways communication between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in Delphi of Ancient Greece were two words: Know Thyself. In the current Revival, there is a question to answer: it's more easily recognized as "Doctor who?" but it is, in fact, "Who are you?" So this is what defines the show's current orientation.

Now this (to me) very much ties in with this amazing quote about the symbols used in religion and language:

Notes on Poetry and Religion

Hopefully at some point I'll manage to turn all this into writing, but for now, this is a glimpse into where my head's at. (My header also gives a good indication... *g*)

Via [livejournal.com profile] solitary_summer. This vid is incredible - beautifully edited, and utterly relentless (S1, 2 & CoE). Oh show, I loved you far, far too much, and I miss you still:

From here (download available). Vidder's summary:

Death, death and more death. The world is going to shit and the members of Torchwood are in the eye of the storm, struggling not only to stay alive but to keep from going completely insane in a nightmare world that often doesn't seem worth saving. Fighting aliens, fellow human beings, personal demons and even each other, their intentions are good but the results can be tragic, and with a far higher cost than anyone could imagine. Sometimes it feels like Torchwood destroys everything it touches. (January 17th, 2010)

We are watching Iron Man 2.

Impish Girl's comment (re. Iron Man's take-off): "Americans. They're just big girls."

They (Impish Girl and the Cherub) also think Tony is an idiot. (They're not wrong, mind you... Their man!pain detector is clearly working.)

ETA: Re. Scarlett Johansson's character: "She is badass!" They are VERY impressed. :)
